According to the Carter Centre—established by the late former U.S. president Jimmy Carter—reported instances of guinea worm disease, an agonizing tropical ailment, dropped to an unprecedented low of merely ten last year. However, despite consistent reductions over many years, completely eliminating this parasite remains an immense challenge. To date, smallpox stands as the sole human disease that has been fully wiped out. What makes eradication so formidable, and might guinea worm eventually become the second? Ian Sample discusses with co-host Madeleine Finlay and David Molyneux, an emeritus professor specializing in tropical disease microbiology at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
